WorldVision is a Christian relief development and advocacy Organization dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. World Vision Uganda is desirous to procure services of competent consultant to conduct;

“Assessment and Prototyping: Pathway to improving economic well-being of vulnerable youth in Kampala”.

2.0 Introduction:

Youth unemployment represents a growing global challenge. This challenge is particularly pronounced in Uganda which has one of the youthful and most rapidly growing populations in the world. 77% of Ugandans are under 30 years of age, and 64% of those aged between 18-24 years are unemployed.

About 500,000 young people are expected to enter the labour market every year; the number of new entrants into the labour force will be growing and will be younger in the next few decades.

In Kampala, an urban hub that attracts youth migrating from rural areas in the hope of opportunity. the youth unemployment issue is dire. Idle and frustrated. youth are engaging in vulnerable employment and leaning on high-risk coping methods such as gambling and drug abuse. The growing challenge of absorbing youth into the labour market has created an urgent need for improved pathways to programs that provide skills as well as meaningful employment and self-employment opportunities for young people in Kampala.

3.0 Background:

As a child-focused organisation, World Vision Uganda is in a unique position to build upon its achievements in early childhood programs by continuing to invest in children as they transition to adulthood. To better support youth in Kampala to gain durable and decent livelihoods, World Vision Uganda designed and delivered the Urban Program on Livelihoods and Income Fortification and Socio Civic Transforrnation (UPLIFT) project in slums of Nakawa and Makindye divisions of Kampala (2012-2017). The projectwas funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP) with co-funding from World Vision Australia (WVA).

As a result of the positive and sustained impact of the UPLIFT project, and requests from the local government (Kampala Capital City Authority: KCCA). World Vision Uganda has received funding from DFAT and VVVA to invest into a second phase. UPLIFT II will continue to work in Nakawa and Makindye. and will also expand into Kawempe division of Kampala due to high youth unemployment rates in the area. While UPLIFT II will expand its geographic imprint, it will refine the focus of the project to improving the economic well-being of vulnerable young people (aged 16 - 30 years).
