CALL FOR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FOR CERTIFICATION OF TREE NURSERIES AND FOREST CONTRACTORS

The Sawlog Production Grant Scheme (SPGS) Phase III is a project of the Government of Uganda, funded by the European Union (EU) and being implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The primary objective of the SPGS III Project is to support private sector tree farmers to establish commercial forest plantations through provision of grants and technical support.
Since 2004, SPGS has supported the establishment of close to 50 000 hectares of plantations for timber, poles and fuelwood. This phase of the Project will support establishment of an additional 30 000 hectares by the year 2020.
In addition to supporting commercial tree farmers, SPGS Ill implements an annual certification program for tree nurseries and forest contractors. The objective of certification is to guarantee private commercial tree growers, access to quality seedlings so that they can establish plantations of acceptable national standards.
FAO invites applications from interested individuals and companies, either operating tree nurseries or involved in forestry contracting, to express interest for certification for the year 2018/2019.
Application requirements:
a) Tree nurseries
i. Should be a private based entity (Company, Individual, CBO or NGO).
ii. Should have the capacity to produce 100,000 seedlings per season.
iii. Should be able to raise a variety of these species;
Pinus caribaea, Pinus patula, Maesposis eminii (Musizi), Terminalia superba,
Tectona grandis (Teak), Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus clones, Araucaria
cunninghamii, Cupressus lusitanica, Markhamia lutea, Melia volkensii, Gmelina
arborea, Pinus oorcapa
iv. Seed or cuttings should be obtained from FAO/SPGS III recommended sources
b) Forest contractors
i. Must be a legally registered company (Company documents should be attached)
ii. Must have a minimum of 30 employees
iii. Indication of previous experience in forestry work
iv. Individual contractors must have attained either formal or informal training in forestry
